Rooted to rise.
Rootward brings meaning, perseverance, and focus back to how children and adults learn, work, and live. Strong roots first. Then we rise.
Knowing where you come from, what you value, and what you are responsible for.
The strength to stay with hard things, fail, and come back stronger.
Growth that lasts because it is built on something real underneath.
Rootward serves schools, businesses, and women, each through programs built on the same foundation.

Focus & Fortitude is a school program that trains three things kids are losing: the attention to stay with hard work, the fortitude to get back up after failure, and the responsibility to own their actions and how those actions land on others.
Now booking faculty PD and school partnerships for the 2027/2028 school year.

Attention is being trained every day by screens and apps built to pull it away.
One bad grade or a hard problem and they shut down. Struggle feels like proof they can't.
Every action lands on someone, and too often that weight gets handed to someone else to carry.
The brain grows stronger through the hard things it practices. Focus & Fortitude builds three capacities students carry into every classroom and every part of their lives.
Training the brain to hold attention.
Attention is a skill, not a trait. Students learn to stay with one thing in a world built to pull them in a hundred directions.
Strength through difficulty and failure.
Students learn to stay with hard work, recover after a setback, and see struggle as the workout that makes them stronger.
Carrying the weight of responsibility.
Students learn to carry two kinds of weight: the responsibility they hold for themselves, and the impact their actions have on others.
Every student knows these moments, even if they've never had words for them. They are the places where focus, fortitude, and responsibility give way. You can't fix a state you can't name.
"I knew it last night. It's gone."
Too much at once. Step one landed; the rest didn't.
Staying quiet so you can't be the one who messes up.
"This is dumb. I'm not doing it."
Every student has all four. Focus & Fortitude gives them a way back from each one.
Every piece is built to fit into what teachers already do, never to add to their load. Teachers feel what their students feel before they learn a single strategy.
The starting point
A half day or full day experiential training. Teachers live the Four States firsthand and leave with classroom ready tools they can use the next morning.

The Weight Room and the Failure Lab: whole grade experiential assemblies that bring the program to life. A parent session carries the language home.
Ask about add ons →The full ecosystem
PD, assemblies, advisory lessons, in person sessions, a midyear recalibration, and a parent session. One language, all year.
See the partnership year →The same focus and fortitude behind our school programs, in a small summer class built around one skill at a time.
Grammar told as a story. Students journey through Grammarshire, where every part of speech has a place, a role, and a reason. Over six weeks, rules that once felt random begin to make sense, and they stick.
Handwriting built through muscle memory. Students practice letter formation with intention and repetition until neat, steady writing becomes automatic, freeing their attention for what they want to say.
Classes run in the summer and are small on purpose. Every student is seen, coached, and given the chance to do something hard and get better at it. Join the interest list to hear first when summer dates open.
Join the summer interest listI built Focus & Fortitude because I watched students, and my own two boys, get told to focus, try harder, and take responsibility, with no one showing them how. Distraction, fear of failure, and not seeing how their choices land on others aren't character flaws. They're skills nobody trained.
My background spans classroom teaching, bilingual education, school operations and accreditation work, and mindfulness programming for schools. Rootward brings that together into one program with one vocabulary, so the language students learn in an assembly is the same language they hear from their teachers and at home.
Karen Johnson, Founder
The full year partnership
For schools ready to go beyond a single PD day, the partnership year runs Focus & Fortitude across teachers, students, and parents, so the language becomes part of the school's culture.
The pacing is set with each school's calendar. No two partnership years look identical, but every one includes the same core.
01
To open the year
Teachers experience the program and learn its language first, so everything that follows rests on shared understanding.
02
Fall and spring
The Weight Room opens the year. The Failure Lab lands before a high pressure stretch. Whole grade experiences that launch the vocabulary.
03
Across the year
Teacher delivered with zero extra prep, so every advisor speaks the same language the assemblies introduced.
04
Across the year
Rootward facilitates live in the room on a gradual release model, so by year's end teachers run the program on their own.
05
Midyear
Built from the school's own classroom experience at the halfway point, with support for the students who need it most.
06
Scheduled with the school
The program explained, one felt experience, and simple moves families can use at home.
For the past several years, Rootward has partnered with the lower school at The Awty International School to bring focus and resilience work to its youngest students.
Students build their own mind jars and use them to see what happens when a busy mind is given time to settle. It becomes a calming tool they can return to on their own.
Students listen to different styles of music and draw the images each piece creates in their minds. The activity builds sustained attention and helps children notice their inner world.
We introduced first graders to resilience through tasks designed to be hard:
Students practiced frustration, persistence, and teamwork in a safe space. They learned that hard does not mean impossible, and that asking for a pause is a strength.

Steady Under Pressure is a 90 minute team workshop that gives your people a shared language and simple tools for staying focused, steady, and connected when work gets intense.
Now booking for teams of 8 to 30.

People stay silent in the meeting, then talk about it afterward.
Everyone is working hard, but the important work isn't moving.
Small conflicts grow, mistakes go unowned, and good people seem tired.
Most wellness offerings help people feel better for an hour. Steady Under Pressure changes what they actually do on a hard Tuesday afternoon.
Experience first, explanation second. Your team doesn't sit through a lecture on stress. They feel it, name it, and practice what to do about it, together.
A live team challenge.
Everyone works under real, low stakes pressure, so they can see exactly how they respond in the moment.
One shared language.
Your team learns simple words for what pressure does to people at work, so asking for help stops sounding like an excuse.
Tools that fit a busy day.
Four quick tools, each under two minutes, practiced on real work from their week and built into habits they already have.
Start with Steady Under Pressure, then add what your team needs next.
Extended
The full workshop plus a team culture segment on the weight each person carries, for themselves and for the people they work beside.

A check in a month later to see what stuck, revisit commitments, and share simple before and after results with leadership.
Ask about this →For managers

Keep me postedWomen spend their days pouring into everyone else. Rootward for Women is a place to slow down, refill, remember who you are, and grow from there, in workshops and day retreats built to fit into a real woman's schedule.
Small group workshops, held in person, where the work is gentle, honest, and yours.
For teachers who give everything.
Teachers carry the weight of a whole room every day. This workshop is a pause just for them: space to rest, refill, and remember why they started, so they walk back into their classrooms rooted instead of running on empty.
Book Recharge →Coming home to who you are.
Somewhere between the roles of mother, partner, professional, and caretaker, it is easy to lose track of yourself. This workshop helps women reconnect with their values, their roots, and the woman underneath it all.
Book Reconnect →A self discovery workshop.
For women ready to look forward. A guided journey into what you want, what you are capable of, and who you are becoming, so your next season grows from something real.
Book Rediscover →Most retreats ask women to leave for a weekend. Ours fit inside the school day: arrive after drop off, spend the day on yourself, and be back in the car line on time.
Timed to start after drop off and end before pickup, with no childcare or overnight plans needed.
Reflection, conversation, creative work, nourishing food, and quiet time, in a calm and beautiful setting.
Every woman leaves with a clearer sense of herself and a simple way to keep that feeling going.
Join a workshop on your own, or bring one to your school, church, or circle of friends. The Recharge workshop can also be booked by schools as a staff wellness day.
A guided legacy book for gathering the stories, recipes, traditions, and wisdom that make a family who they are, so they are never lost and can be passed down for generations.
